When should I take the Mindful Mamma hypnobirthing class?
You can take this class as early as you like or as late as you like. If you take it early, you maximise the benefits of the relaxation techniques, and you give yourself plenty of time to learn the techniques. If you take it late, you immediately feel calmer and more confident about your birth, which, actually increases your chances of an easier, quicker birth. Ideally, we recommend between 27 and 32 weeks, but have had people do this as late as 3 days before birth, with great results. You can book and secure your place as early as 12 weeks.
I am a very tense person. Will I be able to make the techniques work for me?
If you are a tense person, then these techniques will be even more valuable for you. Every-one can learn to relax to some extent, and with our experienced and knowledgeable background, we can help.
What if I want an epidural?
You can plan a hypnobirth and plan an epidural, because what we teach you is how to stay relaxed, no matter what turn your birthing takes. However, when it comes down to it, you will probably not choose an epidural after all, because the techniques you learn and the confidence you attain is good enough.
But I’m not sure about self-hypnosis.
Self-hypnosis is a fast track method for really relaxing. If you like to relax, you’ll love self-hypnosis. If you don’t like to relax, I suggest you take these classes before your baby arrives! With hypnobirthing, you stay awake and fully in control throughout. When mums are labouring naturally, they kind of “go within” themselves, focusing on their body and shutting out the goings on around them. Self-hypnosis helps your body to do what comes naturally.
I’m not sure I believe it’ll work for me.
We don’t promise you your dream birth. No-one can do that. What we do promise, is that this course will help you towards your best birth. Our courses are designed to increase your chances of feeling in control, and having a more satisfying birth.
What if it doesn’t work? Will I have wasted my money?
These classes are educational as well as practical. You can’t “unlearn” what you learn in class. You can’t take away the relaxation and bonding that you create during your pregnancy. Take these classes as part of your preparation for birth, as you would any other antenatal class. If your birth doesn’t go the way you wanted it to, you will have the techniques to calm yourself through the upheaval, which will help with your processing and recovery afterwards. Often, mums who have had managed and stressful labours, say that the Hypnobirthing really helped them through it. And it helps the baby cope too, because these techniques are designed to keep oxygen supply to placenta and baby at maximum capacity.
Should I do another antenatal class too?
The Mindful Mamma class goes very well alongside NCT or other antenatal classes. Other classes may well teach you that relaxation is important for a good birth. In our classes we go into detail about HOW to relax with practical, highly effective techniques. After all, being told to “relax” doesn’t necessarily make it easy to do. The techniques you will learn are a wonderful adjunct the educative components of other antenatal classes.
Can I come on my own?
The Mindful Mamma workshop is designed for you and the people who will be in the room with you, supporting you. However, if you want to do this on your own, we know from experience, that that works very well. You are more than welcome to come on your own, or to bring two birthing companions. Either way, the price covers one or all of you.
My partner doesn’t want to come. What should I do?
In our experience, many dads are sceptical about this workshop when they come onto it. By the time they leave, they are converted. At a risk of sounding gender-stereotyped, men love this course because we teach science, logic, facts and figures, and we show you practical “what to do” tips. There is no mumbo jumbo, no tree hugging and certainly no group hugs! If he is going to be at the birth, then drag him onto the course, using every trick that you know to get him there, and if he absolutely won’t come, come on your own.
I’ve been told I have a low lying placenta. Should I still come to the class?
It is quite common to have a low lying placenta at 20 weeks gestation, but the chances of it moving as your uterus grows, are very high (about 95%). You will be offered another scan just to make extra sure – not because they think it is likely to be a problem. You can take the class anyway, benefit from the relaxation during your pregnancy, and if you do end up with a scheduled c-section, the relaxation will still come in very handy before, during, and after the operation.
Can I do this workshop privately?
Yes, I do private courses, tailored to suit your needs, from my office in Melton Mowbray. Costs are £265 all in, you get your book, your handouts, and all the exclusive class MP3s. Choose between two three hour sessions, one six hour session or three two hour sessions.
